July 21, 2021. Congratulations to Sam Stickley on his excellent exit seminar and successful dissertation defense! Stay tuned for papers about modeling salamander distributions using ultra-high resolution microclimate data and physiological models. Cool stuff.
December 18, 2020. A huge congratulations to Matt C. on successfully defending his dissertation!! We look forward to sharing the results from his research on understory herb responses to resource variation soon!
October 21, 2020. A lot has happened since I last updated this page! We said goodbye to Mara and Luis, who graduated and have moved on to new jobs. We have several new papers out or in the pipeline. Check out our publications page to learn more about the work of past and present students. We also have several new projects underway thanks to new grants from the DOE, NREC, and SARE.
September 30, 2020. Marissa Chase has been selected to receive a $14,799 grant from the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR-SARE) for the project, “Improving Apple and Peach Pollination by Advancing Knowledge of how Forest Management Affects Wild Bee Functional Diversity.” Congratulations Marissa!

August 3, 2018. Jen and colleagues’ recent paper about insect infestations and forest carbon cycling published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences was highlighted in the EOS Research Spotlight and EOS News. Read more.
July 16-26 2018. Tyler and Jen traveled to northern Alaska to collect data and and deploy sensors for Jen’s project examining Arctic shrub expansion and its effects on plant trait variation and belowground carbon cycling. We had great a time in the field until we reached the North Slope of the Brooks Range, at which point we found the mosquitoes or they found us!

April 23, 2018. April has been an exciting and busy month for the Fraterrigo lab. Sam and Jen presented papers at the US-IALE conference in Chicago, Ron gave a presentation at the Illinois Native Plant Society Indigenous Plant Symposium in Carbondale, IL, and Jen traveled to Columbia, Missouri to give a seminar and meet with School and Natural Resources faculty and Forest Service scientists.

Please join us at the Urbana Free Library on Thursday, March 2 at 7 pm to hear graduate student Matt Candeias’s talk entitled, “The World of Avian Pollinators.” Matt will share some of his favorite pictures and his considerable knowledge of bird-pollinated plants.
